Work is very stressful but I don’t need therapy… do I?

We all need help at times in today’s busy whirlwind work life. When taking a break for lunch is "impossible", or having a holiday becomes a forgotten dream, it's time to stop and think: “What happened?” And that maybe it's time to find a good therapist.

Talking therapy allows you to open up to someone who really listens, who is objective and approachable. It lets you explore what is going on in your world - what is really making you anxious or stressed?

Perhaps technology feels like your worst enemy. Do you feel sick in the morning at the thought of opening your inbox for fear of a request or demand you can’t fulfil quickly enough?

The life-work balance becomes harder to manage as expectations increase. Those email alerts make it tempting to log in at the weekend. If you try to ignore them, they just stay on your mind until you give in and answer... just this one time!

Stress leads to anxiety so you turn to the easiest coping mechanism available. That could be a glass of wine or two, or perhaps some chocolate. The feel-good factor provides a short-term high. Once the effect wears off though you feel depleted and anxiety is exacerbated.

Bad habits are an integral part of our comfort zone, but they can be changed. Becoming aware of our own behaviour is the first step towards positive change.

Looking after ourselves is the best way to start reducing anxiety. An experienced therapist will empower you to consider things differently, and to start experimenting with alternative options. Everyone is unique and has their weaknesses, but change is always a possibility. It could take hard work and practice but anxiety and stress can be brought under control.
